Homestead Heritage

Waco, Texas

Homestead Heritage is an agrarian and craft-based Christian community that lives the simple and sustainable life just 20 minutes north of Waco.   At Homestead Heritage, they prefer the simple life and strong community. They work together to grow food and make most of what they need for daily life.

At Homestead Heritage, visitors will go on a self-guided tour throughout the acreage, and stop by different buildings as artisans demonstrate and teach how each item is made. Beginning in the fields, visitors see sheep grazing and horses plowing fields. The grains that are harvested from these fields are milled at the 1760s gristmill. Watch the mill and take home freshly ground flour, bread, and pancake and bread mixes.

The sheep’s wool is shorn, dyed and handspun into yarn, and then woven on large looms to make textiles such as blankets and scarves. At the Wood Shop, watch as artisans create award-winning furniture and woodworks.   Visitors can watch baskets as being woven by hand. The Potter’s House has unique wheel-thrown stoneware pottery.

The kids will enjoy Heritage Forge watching the blacksmiths heat metal on an open fire, pound into shape as they forge nails and tools.

The kids will enjoy waking through the farm and garden, especially petting baby goats at the farm. Walk in the large herb garden and tour the aquaponics greenhouses where raising fish are combined with soil-less growing of plants.

Finish your visit by stopping at The Barn and Café Homestead for some shopping and lunch. The Barn is a large 150 year old timber-framed barn where the handmade crafts and furniture are for sale. Visitors can purchase the handcrafts seen throughout their tour including baskets, soaps, candles, woven crafts and woodcrafts. Café Homestead serves up burgers and sandwiches on fresh baked bread, or try the soups, pies, desserts, and homemade ice cream.

Classes are available in spinning, weaving, knitting, and other textile skills.
