The Heritage Farmstead Museum

Plano, Texas

Watch history come to life to a time back when windmills pumped water, horses pulled plows, the food was canned in glass jars, sheep provided wool that was spun for clothing, clothes were dried outside, and big porches had old rocking chairs. Imagine a one-room schoolhouse could fit all of the kids with only one teacher.   History leaps from the pages of a book as visitors can see firsthand the life of early settlers to Texas.

The Heritage Farmstead Museum was once a booming 365 acre wheat farm, and is now a 4.5 acre museum of farming history that shows a simpler way of life.   The Victorian farmhouse surrounded by different outbuildings, each with their own set of museum relics. The kids will enjoy seeing the chickens sitting on their eggs, turkeys strutting, donkeys and sheep grazing, and pigs lying in the mud. Heritage Farmstead Museum has a Fun on the Farm 90 minute program for preschoolers to get up close to the animals and participate in farm activities such as grinding corn to feed the chickens or try to push a plow in the garden soil.   Purchase tickets in advance since there is limited seating.

Take a self-guided tour to a life before electricity and running water to see how clothes were washed and how food was prepared. Visitors can see a fruit and vegetable garden that would have provided food for the family. The museum has old farming equipment, blacksmith shop, old carriages and wagons, as well as the earliest cars and tractors. Visit the one-room schoolhouse and see student desks and the old chalkboard. Visit the old pole barn or explore the creek below.

The Heritage Farmstead Museum is kid-friendly and will help to explain what the life of their ancestors was like during a simpler time. View their events page for children’s programs and summer camps, holiday festivities, and live music in the pole barn.
