The Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge is 3,621 acres, making it one of the largest city-owned nature centers in the United States.  Home of a bison herd and prairie dog town, this beautiful refuge consists of prairie, woodland, wetlands and the Trinity River.  Outdoor activities include hiking, canoeing, birdwatching and animal spotting.   The Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge was created to preserve the ecosystem and local watershed and provide an outdoor escape for its visitors.

The Hardwicke Interpretive Center is very hands-on for kids to learn about animals. The center has live animals and interactive centers to learn about animal bones, feathers, antlers, turtle shells, habitats, tracks and includes a small gift shop with snacks and drinks.

The Hardwick Interpretive Center is very kid-friendly for visitors to learn about animals and their habitats.  There are live animals that live here as well, so kids can get up-close, learn more about the animals, and learn about the animals that live at the refuge.

Follow the map to find the bison herd and groundhog burrows.   Check out their Events page for guided tours and events such as hayrides and bison feeding. They also have Spring Break Camps with bird tours, bison feeding hayrides, hikes, canoeing, and netting in the water or prairie. Summer Camps expose children to the outdoors, exploring trails, spotting wildlife and many hands-on scientific activities.

The Nature Conservation festival is fun outdoor activities, exploration and learning about conservation including a fun run to Greer Island, guided hikes, hayrides and canoe rides on the Trinity River.  Enjoy the food trucks and end the day with a BioBlitz.

Caprock Nature Trail is a great hike for kids with the rock steps through the hardwoods.  This trail has a 120 Million old limestone outcrop, and the half mile trail is just a half mile.

Special needs:

Limestone Ledge Trail is wheelchair accessible, however most other trails are too steep and rocky for wheels.   For a longer stay, consider a baby carrier if toddler or younger.  

Know Before You Go:

  • Check their website for canoe launch status and closures. Operating hours change seasonally.
  • Admission to the Fort Worth Nature Center is $5 for adults, $2 for children ages 3-12, under age 3 is free.
  • Wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring insect repellant and sunscreen.
  • Bring plenty of water.
  • Check for COVID-19 restrictions prior to arrival.
